Phoenix Contact develops and manufactures industrial electrical and electronic technology products that power, protect, connect and automate systems and equipment. The company was founded in Germany in 1923 and today operates 47 international subsidiaries, including Phoenix Contact USA in Lower Swatara Township, Dauphin County.
In 2011, Phoenix Contact celebrated 30 years of operating in the United States. This coincided with significant growth for the company, both globally and locally.
In 2011, global sales increased 13 percent, to 1.5 billion euro (approximately $1.9 billion). Sales in the U.S. were even stronger, growing more than 16 percent compared with 2010, which was also a remarkable recovery period compared with the crisis of 2009.
To keep up with the demand, Phoenix Contact USA hired 102 people in 2011, including 86 people at the company’s U.S. headquarters. Today the company employs 614 people, with about 500 working in Pennsylvania. The company plans to hire 50 new employees in 2012, and again, most will be located in Pennsylvania.
The U.S. headquarters is home to the company’s North American manufacturing facility and distribution center. Both of these facilities increased capacity in 2011. Plans are underway for further expansion of the company’s physical location by building a two-floor addition to the plant between the current manufacturing and logistics areas.
The company also announced a major restructuring in 2011. Previously, Phoenix Contact was organized into five product-driven business units. To ensure sustained, long-term growth, the company has reorganized into three organizations oriented towards the specific requirements of different market levels. This new structure will allow Phoenix Contact to further expand its product portfolio, while also providing the customized systems and solutions that its customers need.
