Nominee Profile

I am part of a live daily television show that is now celebrating 20 years of production with a unique news broadcast by -- kids! DVE-TV reporters are sixth graders who are driven to school an hour early each day to produce their own show. From the second they arrive, they get to work gathering news, features, sports, and weather on Internet links that are appropriate for K-6 grade viewers. They use computers and laptops to rewrite and print their stories for broadcast, after doing their own research online. They also produce an after school newspaper which is posted online on the school's website, which is also maintained partly by our news teams. The after school news team is called DVE-News, and the before school television show is DVE-TV -- thus our combined name of DVE-News/TV. We have taken our show on the road countless times over the past 20 years, traveling around the United States and Canada to interview amazing role models in all walks of life. They say a picture can replace a thousand words, and in the case of our sites we think you'll agree when you see some of the outstanding, kind people who have taken time to share their stories and advice with our reporters. Our reporters are skilled in computer use, digital applications, cameras, microphones, headphones, laptops, wireless devices, data storage, scanning, photography, video editing, and posting their productions on appropriate sites (of course, always with supervision). We think DVE-TV and DVE-News progams have provided our more than 1500 reporters over the past 20 years with confidence, skill, and knowledge of the world around them by applying ever-changing technologies in today's technological age. These sixth grade reporters are learning through hands-on technologies, things that they would never have the chance to experience in a text book or classroom without these two student journalism programs. We hope you find our programs deserving of 2012 PA Tech Award. We are very proud of celebrating 20 years of DVE-TV and DVE-News productions and education this year.
